In 1836, two years before Angola was dreamed of, James and George F Whittaker, Thomas Gale, Ephraim Seely and Artemus Stone, a man from New York, platted the town of Julius, near US 20 West and 600 W on the Defiance to Lima Trail in Jackson Township.

There were 117 lots laid out with a public square and streets named Park, Wall, Defiance, Genessee, Main and Branch. There is no indication that any building ever took place there.
